CBI convicts Excise Superintendent in Disproportionate Assets Case

THREE YEARS RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT WITH FINE OF RS. ONE LAKH TO THEN SUPERINTENDENT OF CENTRAL EXCISE IN DISPROPORTIONATE ASSETS CASE

The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Madurai (Tamil Nadu) has convicted Shri S.X.Jayaraj, then Superintendent of Central Excise, Trichy in a disproportionate assets case and sentenced him to undergo three years Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs. One Lakh. The Court has also ordered for confiscation of the disproportionate assets, both movable and immovable to the State.

CBI had registered a case against Shri S.X.Jayaraj, the then Superintendent of Central Excise, Trichy Commissionerate on the allegations that during the check period from 01.06.1987 to 21.02.2006, Shri S. X.Jayaraj while working in the capacities of Inspector and Superintendent of Central Excise acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The Investigation established that during the check period, he had acquired assets to the tune of Rs.37,03,093/- as against his known sources of income of Rs.23,50,795/- and incurred expenditure of Rs16,58,446/-. The disproportionate assets, both movable & immovable in his name and in the names of his family members were calculated as Rs.30,10,744/- (128%). After completion of investigation, CBI filed charge sheet against him under sections 13(2) r/w 13(1)(e) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 before the Special Judge for CBI Cases, Madurai.

The Trial Court found the accused guilty and convicted him.
